Ingredients

  • 16 oz green beans, fresh or frozen, trimmed
  • 1/2 tsp coconut oil

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, bring 2 inches of water to a boil over medium heat. Place the green beans into a steamer basket over the boiling water and steam for 6-8 minutes or until tender. Let cool slightly and reserve steamer water.

  • Transfer the green beans and coconut oil to a blender or food processor and puree for 1-2 minutes on high or until you reach your desired consistency, adding reserved water, breast milk, formula, water or broth in 1/4 increments if needed. I had to add 1/2 cup of the reserved water to the puree above.

Notes

Age: 4 months and up

Yield: 16 ounces

Coconut Oil Tip: healthy fats are a great thing to add into baby’s first puree. Healthy fats such as organic coconut oil, organic olive oil and grass-fed pasture-raised butter or ghee are my favorite healthy fats to add to baby’s food. You don’t need much, usually 1/2 teaspoon or less, and you can add it to any roasted or steamed veggies for an instant flavor boost. Healthy fats help aide in baby’s brain development and function, repair torn or strained muscles (great for crawlers) and is great for digestion needs.

Love you page! I feel like this is going to help me so much. My baby just turned 6 months old and is breastfed. I am learning about all of this stuff as I make her baby food. So far I have given her the rice cereal, which now I am not too fond on after reading what people have to say on it. As well as trying avocados, bananas, and pears so far. I know she is going to need iron in her diet now and just wondering how I should incorporate that? Should I make her iron fortified cereal instead of the store bought baby rice cereal or oatmeal (and feed that once a day?) Also, what is a good meal plan for a baby her age? I know 2 to 3 small meals. And do I stick with giving her the same thing each meal for a couple days then try a new item or something different at each time? Also, as I first introduce meats, is it good to just give it alone for a meal or does it need to be paired with a fruit or veggie that shes tried already? So sorry I have so many questions!

      love all your questions!
cereal/iron – rice and baby cereal are fine to serve to baby, if not a little bland for a first food. I love that you are introducing avocado, banana and pears to her so she can get some varied nutrients. You can keep the rice cereal, just keep introducing whole foods to her as well (sweet potato, apples, carrots, etc). If she is low in iron then you can do an iron-fortified cereal but you can also just add a little spinach to her pear or apple puree or serve her a smashed egg every couple of days (both are high in iron).
Meals – for now, you can serve the same meals for a couple days and then add in a new food to see how she does. Once you get up to 8 or 9 purees, you can start mixing them together to see how she does.
Meats- meats are great from the very start! I would definitely serve a little mixed into something is is already loving because the meat puree can be a little intense all by itself.
hope this all helps, feel free to email me at hello@babyfoode.com if you have more questions.
